The junction in front of Banani supermarket, where two opposite roads join in with the main road, is a typical example of Bangladesh road system: always clogged, horns blasting away haphazardly, traffic police waving their hands animatedly, and shouting obscenities which would make a slum dweller blush.
To reduce this khati Bangladeshi congestion, a new rule was established: no rickshaws will be allowed to cross the main road to go the opposite road.
When it was first introduced,I thought, just like any NORMAL Bangladeshi, that it will be discarded after a couple of weeks. That, the traffic police would eventually live upto their name and return to their everlasting damn-care mood.
But surprisingly, this new regulation is still being followed rigorously, the traffic police even puncturing any rickshaw trying to take advantage of the police's afternoon tong-adda.
No amount of protest and excuse from the passenger worked on these newly adapted, anti-rickshaw police. I tried to make them understand the importance of education to the future of Bangladesh vainly one day, so that they allow me to go to my coaching.
I saw people masquerading to be utterly sick, people actually sick, old and fragile people, to try and convince these police officers to show them some pity and let them cross. But the invigorated traffic sergeants showed no leniency, they followed their superior's command to the full stop.
And I began to wonder, what power can sway these unfaltering police? One day,I got my answer.
Waiting for the road to clear a little,so I could cross in one piece,I was there at the junction.A neat line of rickshaws was stacked behind me, their passengers getting off, grumbling to themselves. And then came two rickshaws without any sign of stopping at the end of the road,as per rule. All of the eyes went towards them with the same question lingering in everyone's mind, how dare he??
The source of the rickshaw puller's inhumane courage was apparent when I looked more intently at the passengers. The rickshaw puller wasn't actually being brave, he was being forced.
The passengers of those two rickshaws were TRANSVESTITE,whom apparently were forcing the rickshaw puller to break the rule and cross the road. They were constantly clapping very hard and were giving flying kisses to the traffic sergeants(three were present at that time), who stared on helplessly, as they saw their might being cruelly mocked. I even saw one of the sergeants blush a little. The sergeants didn't even flinch when the rickshaws blazed away in front of them.
So finally I got my answer. It just takes a couple of transvestite to scare the shit out anyone, even people with guns and the power to let you rot in a jail...
