Just finished watching the fourth episode of season 4 and I noticed a couple of things. The way the episode portrayed the Others was extremely intriguing since the books do not divulge too much information about this icy mystique.
In the episode, we first sense that the Others are about to come when we see the poured water freezing in front of Ghost. Whenever the Others appear, the temperature drops or they appear WHEN the temperatures drop. Research about them is scarce, as Samwell Tarly says in book five (small spoiler, sorry!). Whatever the case, they are correlated with a drop in temperatures. If you see water freezing instantly, you better get your dragon steel ready.
We then see one of the Other taking the sacrificed baby on a horse to a mountain. This is where things get really interesting. The one riding the horse is the familiar Other. We have seen him before. He was the one leading the attack against the Night's Watch men on Fist of the First Men. But the second Other looked really different. From the bird's eye POV, I almost thought that was a human being. He was sharply dressed, not wearing rags like the previous one. It's almost as if he is a high born Other (the episode makes a couple of references to high born, Lock being one, and Tanner being the other). This scene provided evidence that the Other have hierarchies, which will prove significant later in the whole story arch. Always remember, WINTER IS COMING!
The high born Other then turns the human baby into one of their own. This proves two things: ONLY the high born Others have this magic, and they need human BABIES to make a baby Other. This begets other questions, as does every other answer in this series. How long does it take for the baby Other to fully mature? Does he go through puberty? JK.
The place where they have their HQ, across a frozen lake, in between a Mordor looking mountain, gives more insight into them: they have a HQ and work in some sort of order. They are not your ordinary brain eating zombies. They are zombies with a plan which means Westeros is screwed big time!
